Demystifying Root Canal Treatment: What to Expect

Root canal treatment (endodontic therapy) is one of the most misunderstood dental procedures. Despite its reputation for being painful, modern techniques and local anesthesia make the treatment virtually painless—comparable to getting a standard filling. In fact, a root canal is actually a pain-relief procedure designed to save a tooth that is severely decayed or infected.

When is a Root Canal Needed?

Inside each tooth is a soft tissue called pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. If deep decay, cracks, or trauma allow bacteria to enter the pulp, it can become inflamed or infected. Symptoms that you might need a root canal include:

  • Severe tooth pain, especially when chewing or applying pressure
  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
  • Swelling or tenderness in the nearby gums
  • Darkening or discoloration of the infected tooth

How the Procedure Works

During a root canal, the dentist removes the infected pulp, cleans and disinfects the canal chamber, and then fills and seals the space with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. Finally, because the tooth becomes more brittle after losing its blood supply, a dental crown is placed to restore its shape, strength, and full functionality. Saving your natural tooth is always the best option, and a root canal allows you to do just that.
